The clutch pedal footpad in my car has a tendency to become loose (a design fault now known with the model of car I drive).

It’s a tricky thing to refit, taking a lot of effort and time to stretch and position it right… just when you think you have the last corner of it in place, one of the the other corners slips off.

Either that or it’s an incovenient trip to the garage.

My conventional toolbox didn’t have anything that could really help… then when rummaging through my kitchen drawer, a brass picture hook glinted at me.

Turns out the rounded hook is the perfect size and angle to open out the lip and the flared shape of the picture hook is perfect for getting purchase to stretch the rubber over the metal pedal.

Sometimes an unexpected tool or lateral approach is all you need to solve the problem.
